Paramount is bringing the Midnight Society back around the campfire.
According to Hollywood Reporter, the studio is developing a big-screen adaptation of Are You Afraid of the Dark?—the 90s Nickelodeon show that sat on the scare scale somewhere between Goosebumps and that book with the black and white drawings—and the IT screenwriter has been tapped to pen the script.
The writer, Gary Dauberman, also wrote the demented doll film Annabelle and its sequel, so the guy has some previous experience with the kind of freaky-ass Are You Afraid of the Dark? characters that terrified a generation of kids. He's also onboard to produce the film.
"The show is about the shared experience of telling stories—especially scary ones," Dauberman told the Reporter. "We're going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves."
Are You Afraid of the Dark? was basically Nickelodeon's attempt at making a kid-friendly horror show like Tales from the Crypt. The Canadian-made show ran on Nick from 1992 until '96, with a short-lived revival in 1999 that petered out after two seasons.
It was an anthology series, with each episode framed as a scary tale told around a campfire by a group of friends called the Midnight Society. The stories were mostly modernized fairytales or monster stories about vampires or ghosts or a weird, smiling jester called the Ghastly Grinner.
It's unclear whether Dauberman's new adaptation will center around a single story or try to pull some all-encompassing move like the Goosebumps remake, but whatever happens, that nutbag Dr. Vink better make an appearance.
