Hozoji Matheson-Margullis wears several different hats. She is the drummer in a rock band, Helms Alee. She is a member of the Puyallup Tribe, native to Washington state. Her preternatural diving skills have made her a skilled harvester of geoducks, a massive clam that looks oddly like genitalia. And now as a marine biologist, she is one of the few Indigenous scientists in the country.
But while these seem like different, even conflicting, facets of Matheson-Margullis's identity, she brings a steady, meticulous lens to each part of her life. At a time when national politics threaten Indigenous populations and the environment they have protected and thrived on for centuries, she is trying to channel her work into change.
