It's been almost a full year since Jessica Williams last appeared on the Daily Show, and these days, the comedian is looking to make a name for herself in her own right, much like the character she plays in her upcoming Netflix film.
As Entertainment Weekly reports, she's starring in The Incredible Jessica James, a movie about an aspiring playwright in New York. In the trailer the streaming service dropped on Friday, we get to see Williams venturing out on Tinder dates, telling straphangers to stop manspreading, and dancing in various places one typically doesn't dance in.
According to Variety, our heroine also spends her time working with public school kids on plays of their own, finding a way to exercise her inner playwright while she waits for a big break. As her career in drama picks up—spurred by a chance run-in with Tony-winner Sarah Jones—she meets Boone (Chris O'Dowd), a recently divorced app designer, and the two strike up a fledgling relationship.
Jessica James reunites Williams with director Jim Strouse, who cast her as a budding graphic novelist struggling to set her mom up with a man in People Places Things. Back in 2015, Williams told VICE she loved working with the director, who let the cast goof around and improvise during scenes—something we might see in spades when Jessica James debuts next month.
