The VICE Guide to Right Now: Tim Kaine Is Officially Hillary Clinton's Running Mate

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton announced Friday that US Senator Tim Kaine will join her on the ticket ahead of their party convention in Philadelphia.

Kaine, a former Virginia governor who previously served as mayor of Richmond, has been on Clinton's short list for the past few weeks alongside Elizabeth Warren, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and a handful of others. He was strongly considered by Barack Obama back in 2008, too.

Rumors that Kaine was the likely pick began circulating Thursday evening, bolstered by a Times report that Bill Clinton is a Kaine fan and Elizabeth Warren's admission on Colbert's The Late Show that if she were going to be the pick, she "would know it by now."

Clinton officially announced the choice via text message to her supporters as she began making her way through Florida this weekend.

Kaine is a relatively safe choice in that he's well-liked in his home state, which should be a November battleground, and is not known for inspiring rage on the right. But his stances in favor of free trade and against tougher bank regulations may not sit well with liberals who supported Bernie Sanders in the primaries.

The pair are scheduled to appear together at a rally in Miami on Saturday and then continue up to Philadelphia for the start of the Democratic Convention on Monday.
