On Tuesday, officials at the Auschwitz Memorial in Poland added one more activity to the list of things you should obviously not do while visiting the former Nazi concentration camp, slamming a US Congressman for filming himself advocating for a strong US military from inside a gas chamber, USA Today reports.
The video, which was posted on Saturday, shows Louisiana Republican Clay Higgins filming himself all around the camp stressing the importance of US troops and homeland security.
"It's hard to walk away from gas chambers, ovens, without a very sober feeling of commitment, unwavering commitment, to make damn sure that the United States of America is protected from the evils of the world," he says.
"This is why homeland security must be squared away, why our military must be invincible," Higgins added.
While it's not uncommon for people to share their feelings when viewing the Holocaust memorial site—or film themselves doing it—officials from the museum apparently thought the Congressman took his a little too far. The Auschwitz Memorial slammed the video in a tweet on Tuesday reminding people that a former gas chamber should not be used as "a stage."
According to USA Today, Higgins's office has yet to officially respond to the reprimand, but it's not the first time the Louisiana Republican has said or done something controversial on social media without an apology. Just last month, Higgins said the US should hunt down "suspected" Islamic extremists and "kill them all" in a fiery Facebook post after a terror attack in London. His office later blamed the "leftist media" for misinterpreting the post, which is still up online.
