A majority of US voters are "embarrassed" that Donald Trump is the president, according to a new poll released Wednesday.
The Quinnipiac poll, which surveyed 1,412 voters across the country, found that 51 percent of Americans are feeling the shame about President Trump. A majority of voters also said Trump was not level-headed (67 percent), not honest (59 percent), and not fit to be president (56 percent)—and a whopping 69 percent said they just want him to stop tweeting.
The poll numbers split strongly between gender and race lines. While men are tied 49 to 49 percent over whether Trump is fit to lead, 63 percent of women say he's not.
Fifty percent of white voters say Trump is fit to be president, against 48 who say he's not. Black voters spoke out overwhelmingly against Trump—94 percent agree that he isn't qualified to lead the country.
These numbers aren't exactly new. Trump's historically low approval ratings currently hover just shy of 39 percent, according to FiveThirtyEight, and a Pew Research poll from August had voters calling him "prejudiced," "selfish," and 63 percent saying he's doing a pretty lowsy job.
Over the past month, Trump hasn't done a whole lot to assuage things. He's started beefs with the world of sports, announced plans to boot 800,000 DREAMers out of the country, invented African countries, completely botched Puerto Rico disaster relief, and proven that he has no idea how a pick-up truck works.
"With an approval rating rating frozen in the mid-thirties, his character and judgement questioned, President Donald Trump must confront the harsh fact that the majority of American voters feel he is simply unfit to serve in the highest office in the land," Quinnipiac University assistant director Tim Malloy said.
"A divider, responsible for the deepening chasm of racial discord. That is the inescapable characterization of President Trump from voters who see race relations deteriorating on his watch. Weary and wary of the Twitter-happy president's blizzard of provocative tweets, voters say dump the device for good."
