Some Assholes Changed New York City to 'Jewtropolis' on Snapchat's Map

Snapchat users woke up Thursday morning to find that trolls had vandalized the app's Snap Map feature, changing the name of New York City to "Jewtropolis," NBC New York reports.

According to Snapchat Support, which responded on Twitter after someone pointed out the Semitic hack, the issue comes from Mapbox, an open-source mapping software that Snapchat uses for its Snap Map. The vandalism also reportedly appeared on the CitiBike app, as well as StreetEasy and Zillow—all apps that also use Mapbox.

"Snap Map relies on third party mapping data which has unfortunately been subject to vandalism," Snapchat Support wrote early Thursday morning. "We are working with our partner Mapbox to get this fixed immediately."

The offensive name change was only live for a few hours before Mapbox found and fixed it, and as of now, New York City is back to New York City on the Snap Map. The company's CEO, Eric Gundersen, confirmed to TechCrunch that the issue is "100 percent" resolved and said it "should have never happened."

"It's disgusting," Gundersen told TechCrunch. "We’re constantly scanning for this, and it’s an error on our part [to have missed it]."
