How an Intricate Inmate Soccer League Is Helping Prisoners in Africa

VICELAND's show VICE World of Sports collects compelling stories from all across the world that highlight the intersection of culture and politics with sport. Today, we're bringing you an exclusive free episode that investigates how soccer is being used in a maximum security prison in Africa as method for prison reform.

On this episode, we get rare access to the only maximum security facility in Uganda, known as Luzira Upper Prison, which houses some of the most dangerous criminals in the country. The prison is also home to it's own highly organized soccer league, complete with a 30-page constitution and governing body, that's made up entirely of inmates.

We stepped inside the infamous prison just in time for it's electric annual soccer tournament, and got the chance to talk with some of the inmate competitors to find out how this alternate method of reform has impacted their lives inside.
