HBO dropped a new trailer for Insecure Thursday, and it looks like writer, director, and star Issa Rae's character is coming to terms with her newfound independence now that she's single.
The second season of the acclaimed show—loosely based on the web series Awkward Black Girl that garnered more than 25 million views before HBO picked it up—opens just as Issa Dee, a 20-something nonprofit worker in Los Angeles, is readying herself to start dating again. The trailer reveals that Issa now knows what she's looking for and is refusing to waste her time with any of the dudes who insist on asking her 10 million white-bread questions over drinks.
Now that she's split up with her boyfriend Lawrence (Jay Ellis), Issa's found even more time to spend with her friends. She's still tag-teaming with Molly (Yvonne Orji), her best friend and a top-tier corporate attorney, and both women have achieved a level of success, but they still face resistance in their white-dominated workplaces. As the show's name suggests, they struggle along, somewhat awkwardly, as they carve out a place for themselves in LA.
As executive producer Prentice Penny told Deadline, the second season will also give us a sharper look at Issa's old flame—who, just like the show's star, is beginning to build a life of his own.
"A lot of our stories last year were Lawrence and Issa dependent," Penny told Deadline. "Now that they've broken up, we're able to see more of his life, his world."
Rae spoke to Entertainment Tonight in slightly broader terms about what to expect from the upcoming season, saying that there are "things that haven't been explored that will be explored" this time around.
"Our actors are killing it. Jay, Yvonne, they're killing it," Rae said. "Me and the writers put in work this season. We feel like we're really staying true to life."
