'SNL' and 'Westworld' Swept the Emmy Nominations This Year

Back in the day, there was, like, one reasonably good show on television, squeezed in between episodes of ElimiDate and Just Shoot Me. Now the folks picking Emmy nominations have a metric shit-ton of quality content to sift through in order to choose their top contenders. On Thursday, they did just that, announcing a wide-ranging list of premium shows and performances making up the 2017 Emmy nominees.

This year, your father's old favorite show, Saturday Night Live, got a whopping 22 nominations—including Kate McKinnon for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Alec Baldwin for Best Supporting Actor in the same category. The sketch show broke its own record for nominations, snagging more this year than it ever has in its four-decade run.

That dour robot show Westworld, which everyone went crazy over and then promptly forgot about, is tied at the top with another 22 noms. Streaming favorites Stranger Thingsand Handmaid's Tale were also highly recognized, receiving 18 and 13 nominations, respectively.

Over in comedy, Donald Glover's Atlanta—which took home two Golden Globes last year—has been nominated for Best Comedy Series, along with Aziz Ansari's Master of None and last year's winner Veep.

In the Best Limited Series category, HBO's The Night Of grabbed a nomination, alongside Big Little Lies. The latter was also recognized in the Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor categories, with Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Alexander Skarsgärd all getting nods for their performances.

The glaring omission this year is The Leftovers, whose brilliant final season should've made it a shoe-in for Best Drama. At least one of the show's stars, Carrie Coon, picked up a nom for her role in Fargo.

The 69th annual Emmy Awards will be hosted by Stephen Colbert on September 17 at 8 PM EST. Read through the top Emmy nominees below and check out the complete list on the Emmys site.
