Earlier this month, a paparazzo came upon Justin Bieber crying in public as he left the apartment of his fiancé, Hailey Baldwin. “For the fans who saw pictures of you crying," the cameraperson asked, "can you just reassure them everything’s OK?”
“This!” Bieber shouted, toting a copy of a Christian guide to marriage, The Meaning of Marriage. “You got good days and you got bad days. It’s not real if it doesn’t have any bad days!” Then the 24-year-old promptly left in a black van.
After hearing about the incident, VICE reporter Eve Peyser got curious. What was it about this book, written by an evangelical pastor and steeped in archaic gender norms, that had Bieber so emotional? She decided to dive right in—and discussed what she learned from the book on the latest episode of The VICE Guide to Right Nowpodcast.
