Jared Kushner, White House adviser and President Trump's son-in-law, reportedly told a Russian official last December that he wanted to set up a way to communicate with the Kremlin so that the United States government, then still under Barack Obama, would not be able to to know what was said.
Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak was surprised by Kushner's suggestion that they use the Russian embassy or consulate to set up such a secret, secure communications channel, the Washington Post reported Friday evening. Intelligence officials told the Post that the whole idea was "extremely naive or absolutely crazy," as not only would American intelligences agencies likely notice that a member of Trump's transition team was walking in and out of Russian diplomatic headquarters, but Russian officials could leak Kushner's request. Still, according to the Post, Kushner indicated that being able to talk to the Kremlin secretly was "necessary."
