Martin Scorsese has already transformed Leonardo DiCaprio into a vengeful 1800s Irishman, an airline tycoon, a coked-out Wall Street bro, and an undercover cop. Now, he's planning to turn the 42-year-old Oscar winner into a beloved American president.
DiCaprio is set to star as Teddy Roosevelt in Paramount's Roosevelt, a Scorsese-directed biopic about our globetrotting, big-stick-carrying 26th president, Deadline Hollywood reports.
Though details on the film are relatively scarce, America's 22nd-coolest president certainly lived a movie-worthy existence. He led the Rough Riders through Cuba during the Spanish-American War, nearly died in the Amazon, supposedly read a book each morning before breakfast, and established 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, four national game preserves, five national parks, and 18 national monuments during his presidency, according to the National Park Service.
The president's fixation on preserving the environment vibes well with DiCaprio's own work to prevent climate change, making Leo a solid fit for the role, as Variety points out. He'll just have to look past the fact that Roosevelt also loved to hunt (and apparently ride?) big game, which is sort of at odds with the whole "protect America's natural wonders" thing.
The duo has been trying to get the film off the ground for more than ten years, so it's still not clear when it will hit theaters. It's just one of a slate of movies the tag team has in the works, including an adaptation of Erik Larson's Devil in the White City and David Grann's Killers of the Flower Moon—a nonfiction book about the systematic slaughter of a Native American tribe in the 1920s.
