Twin Explosions in the Philippines Leave Several Dead, Wounded

Twin explosions rocked the southern Philippine province of Sulu on Monday morning, August 24, leaving several dead and over a dozen others injured.

According to the Philippine Red Cross, the incident occurred at 11:58 a.m. local time. A motorcycle loaded with explosive material detonated near a military truck, killing at least six people and wounding five others.

The Red Cross said that a second explosion occurred at the back of a municipal office.

According to The New York Times, at least nine people were killed in both blasts. Philippine news network ABS-CBN reported that at least 17 people were injured.

The Philippine National Police confirmed that the blast occurred in a town plaza in front of a cathedral that was also bombed in 2019.

The Philippine Coast Guard has placed southwestern Mindanao under red alert following the blasts.

This is a developing story.
